Senior Hunger

In 2011, almost 1 in every 12 seniors above the age of 60 in the United States was food insecure.   That represents 4.8 million seniors nationwide.  More than 4 million low-income adults over age 60 rely on SNAP(Food Stamps) to stay healthy and make ends meet. On average, they receive $119 per month to help put food on the table.  It is imperative that we protect and strengthen nutrition programs to support healthy aging.

Facts about Senior Hunger:

  • Millions of older Americans are at risk for hunger

  • Food insecurity is growing among older adults

    • And it is expected to continue to grow as the baby boom generation gets older

    • An estimated 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 everyday until 2030

  • 3 out of 5 seniors who qualify for CalFresh do not apply

    • This means that 5.2 million seniors miss out on benefits.

  • Almost 1/3 of food insecure seniors are disabled

  • Nearly 65% of food insecure seniors are younger than age 69

  • Nearly 1 in 5 seniors living with grandchildren is food insecure

  • 17% of African American seniors and 18% of Hispanic seniors are food insecure

  • Food insecure seniors are adversely affected for a variety of health outcomes

    • They have lower nutrient intakes and are more likely to suffer from diabetes, depression, limitations in activities of daily living, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, heart attacks and more.
